Media Alert: 1,500 children in mas costumes will be jumping up in Malvern on Saturday, July 18th beginning at 11 am. Ribbon cutting at 10.35

The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Junior Parade begins at 10.35 a.m. with over 1,500 junior masqueraders, Soca and Calypso Music, Caribbean Food and more!

Toronto, ON (July 17, 2015) - The media are invited to join local politicians, civic leaders, and Festival CEO Denise Herrera-Jackson and CAO Chris Alexander to the kickoff  ribbon cutting ceremony for the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival’s Junior Carnival Parade at 10.35 a.m. on Saturday, July 18th. The ribbon cutting will take place south of the intersection of McLevin Ave and Neilson Road. 

The brief launch ceremony will be followed by a 1.1 km long colourful parade of over 1,500 children in Mas costumes.  At the end of the 3-hour event, there will be a Family Day party - "Las Lap in De Park" at Neilson Park.

What:  The Junior Carnival Parade involves children, from 6 months to 16 years old, in Mas costumes from 9 Mas camps. The parade and party is the first large event of the 3-week summer festival.  The children will assemble at the Malvern Community Centre, parade west on McLevin to Neilson Road and then North on Neilson Road to the Neilson Park.

Why:   The annual parade introduces children to the traditions of Carnival. 1,500 children are expected to take part. The junior Mas players, grouped into 9 different Mas camps, will be judged by a panel of professional judges.  

      

           When: Saturday July 18, 2015

            Ribbon cutting at 10:35 a.m. 

Parade begins at 11:00 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 2:00 p.m. 

After the parade is a Family Day Party with junior Calypso Singers, Junior Steel Pan Orchestras and Caribbean Food in Neilson Park. The results of the parade will be announced at the party, which ends at 8:00 p.m.

TORONTO, ON - The media is invited to join Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival's CEO Denise Herrera-Jackson, local MPPs, city of Toronto councillors, Scotiabank representatives and members of the Caribbean Canadian community for the releasing of information about this year's RELOCATED Junior Carnival/Family Day. The colourful 11.30 am media preview will be held at the soon-to-be-opened Malvern Family Resource Centre (90 Littles Rd).

The Festival Management Committee, members of the Toronto Mas Band Association and The Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes will be releasing key information about this year's Children's Parade and Carnival. Starring in the media preview with be 90 children in costumes (with signed model releases) from nine mas camps and will be showing their new Mas dance moves for the first time! There will also be Junior Calypso singers, a dance group and steelpan performances.

For the past two years, the Parade and Family Day has been staged in Downsview Park. However, since this summer the roads and bridge that the children danced along are slated to be closed for reconstruction, the parade is coming to the Malvern community. On Saturday July 19^th, over 1,500 children in Mas costume will be taking to the streets between Malvern and Neilson Park south of Finch and Neilson Road for the annual parade.
